IV Therapy Toronto Clinic Publishes Post on NAD+ Benefits for Healthy Brain Function

Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre, a naturopathic clinic that offers IV therapy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, has announced that they have recently published a blog post that discusses the NAD+ benefits for brain health and restoration. NAD+, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, is one of the essential elements of life but the amount of NAD+ in the body decreases with age. NAD+ has various benefits for the brain, which means that NAD+ therapy or taking NAD+ supplements may help in restoring brain function and enhancing brain health.

One of the benefits of NAD+ for the brain is that it may protect the nerve fibres from demyelination. Demyelination refers to the damage in the myelin sheath, which serves as the protective coating of the nerve fibres in the spinal cord, brain, and in specific nerves in the body. When this protective coating is damaged, the nerve impulses are hampered and are slowed down and some may even be stopped. The results are loss of vision, sensation, and coordination; muscle weakness and stiffness; pain; and changes in bowel and bladder function.

nad+ benefits for brain

NAD+ may also help in improving a person’s memory and sustaining cognitive function. This is because neurotransmitters play an important role in memory retention and cognitive function. Clinical trials and ongoing research indicate that NAD+ may help in blood circulation in the brain of older adults with memory problems, thus improving memory and cognition. In addition, NAD+ may help in improving concentration.

NAD+ may also help in the sending of messages or signals in various parts of the body. This is because it may help in fine-tuning the role of neurotransmitters in carrying messages or signals from one part of the body to another. Various types of neurotransmitters have a role in various functions, including: appetite, memory, liver function, digestive system’s response to food, blood pressure control, motor control, motivation, sleep, heart rate regulation, and reward and reinforcement. Thus, all of these functions may be affected by NAD+ therapy or the use of NAD+ supplements. Using NAD+ for Lyme symptoms is also possible because it provides energy for many enzymatic reactions.

It has also been observed that NAD+ may help in preventing neurological diseases. These include Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Research studies have revealed that having low levels of energy in brain cells, in conjunction with an unhealthy microbiome, may result in the development and progression of neurological disorders. When NAD+ levels are increased through NAD+ therapy or supplementation, the energy and vitality of brain cells improve and may help prevent neurological problems.

And finally, NAD+ may help in re-establishing brain and neurological function. This is because it plays a vital role in the production of the energy that is required by most cells in the body. And one of the organs of the body that requires a lot of energy is the brain.

NAD+ is a naturally occurring molecule in the body and it has the capability to convert glucose into energy. People who have low levels of NAD+ also have low levels of brain sugar, which means that there would be insufficient energy for the proper functioning of the brain cells.

Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre offers NAD+ IV therapy, a form of intravenous treatment. In this process, NAD+ is infused into an IV drip compound and this will bypass the digestive system to swiftly replenish the body with NAD+.

The benefits of NAD+ therapy may not be limited to helping with brain function and cognition. It may also help with anti-aging because it may help sirtuins in working properly. Sirtuins are enzymes that affect how the body ages. Sirtuins may also play an important role in preventing inflammation or in helping the body in recovering from it. Inflammation may be harmful to the body because it may negatively affect the DNA and cell structure, resulting in cell loss.

Those who are interested in NAD+ therapy can contact their Toronto clinic. Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND, and Arv Buttar, NP, are passionate about helping patients with their integrative and functional medicine programs. You are invited to learn about their customized IV therapy drips, high-dose vitamin C, the Myer’s Cocktail, including vitamin B12 and more. Those interested may also inquire about their NAD+ therapy, which may help rebuild neuroreceptor function and detoxification, improve sleep and physical and mental longevity. Please call 416-922-4114 or send them a message here.

Top 5 NAD+ Benefits for Brain Health and Restoration

NAD+ is among the indispensable molecules of life — yet it declines in the human body with aging.

If you haven’t heard of NAD+ or NAD+ therapy, now may be the time to learn about this treatment modality.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) molecules are found in every cell in the body, including our brain cells. Although there are benefits to receiving NAD+ IV therapy or taking NAD+ supplements, health care practitioners and researchers are advocating NAD+ for helping restore brain function and promote brain health.

Benefits of NAD+ on the Brain

Research has shown that NAD+ influences the development, maintenance, and repair of energy at the cellular levels. Some of the benefits of NAD+ for brain health and restoration are:

1. Helps guard the nerve fibres from demyelination

NAD+ protects nerves against demyelination. It may sound like a big word, but demyelination means damage in the protective coating of nerve fibres. This protective covering, called the myelin sheath (hence the term “demyelination”), protects the nerve fibres in the brain, spinal cord, and specific nerves in the body. When the myelin is injured or somehow damaged, the nerve impulses (which are the signals to and from the brain) slow down or stop. In turn, this may cause muscle weakness and stiffness; loss of sensation, vision, and coordination; altered bowel and bladder function; and pain.

2. Acts as messengers in the body

Besides having a neuroprotective effect, NAD+ is essential in controlling physiological functions and cellular communication. NAD+ helps fine-tune the functioning of neurotransmitters, the chemicals that carry messages or signals from one area of the body to another. There are different types of neurotransmitters and some are involved in various functions, such as:

– Appetite
– Blood pressure control
– Digestive system’s response to food
– Liver function
– Memory
– Motivation
– Motor control
– Reward and reinforcement
– Regulation of the heart rate
– Sleep

3. Helps improve memory and maintain cognitive function

Neurotransmitters play a significant role in our central nervous system by supporting cognitive function. Ongoing research and clinical trials suggest that NAD+ may help improve memory and blood circulation in the brain of older adults with memory retention issues. This means that NAD+ may be beneficial in improving concentration and memory.

4. Helps fight against neurological diseases

Scientists believe that NAD+ therapy may help prevent brain diseases. These brain diseases include Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. Studies mention that low levels of brain cells energy (along with an unhealthy microbiome) may be responsible for the development and progression of these neurological diseases. By boosting NAD+ levels via supplementation and/or IV therapy, it may be possible to increase brain cells energy and vitality. Consequently, NAD+ therapy may help individuals stave off neurological disorders.

5. Contributes to restoring brain and neurological function

Whether you’re resting or engaged in intensive physical activity, your body consumes energy. NAD+ participates in the production of energy needed by most cells in the body. And one of the most energy-intensive organs in the body is the brain.

NAD+ is a naturally occurring molecule needed to convert glucose from the food that we consume into energy. When you have low levels of this molecule, there will be a low supply of brain sugar and, therefore, low amounts of energy for the brain cells to work properly.

How can NAD+ IV therapy help you?

Do you want to learn more about NAD+? At our Toronto clinic, Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND, and Arv Buttar, NP, are passionate about helping patients with their integrative and functional medicine programs. You’re welcome to learn about our nutritional IV therapies, including vitamin B12, the Myer’s Cocktail, high-dose vitamin C and more. Lyme Disease Treatment for Humans - Toronto Naturopathic Clinic Accepting New Patients

Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, has announced that they are offering Lyme disease treatment and they are ready to accept new patients. Meanwhile, they have recently published a blog post explaining how the disease affects the hormones. Borrelia burgdorferi, one of the main bacterial species responsible for Lyme disease, is difficult to get rid of from the body, possibly resulting in a long-term persistent Lyme infection.

There are many ways by which Lyme disease may affect the hormones. The disease can affect the endocrine system, thus, possibly interfering with a patient’s hormone balance that results in abnormal hormone levels. It may also affect the liver, which results in problems with metabolizing hormones that in turn may cause hormonal dysfunction. The disease may also cause magnesium levels to decline, which also affects the hormones because magnesium is an important mineral for balancing hormones in the body.

lyme disease treatment for humans

Studies indicate that Lyme disease can affect the thyroid gland, possibly resulting in thyroid dysfunction, particularly Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a kind of hypothyroidism in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. This is due to a process known as molecular mimicry in which the body’s immune system will not only attack Borrelia, but also the thyroid tissue that appears similar to Borrelia.

Meanwhile, with a long-term and persistent Lyme infection, patients often suffer from chronic inflammation. And because the body considers chronic inflammatory states as stressors, this results in adrenal fatigue or adrenal insufficiency because of hormone depletion. This is a symptom that is the result of the impact of Borrelia on the adrenal glands.

The hormonal disruption due to Lyme disease may also affect the reproductive glands, resulting in low levels of testosterone for both men and women, and high or low levels of estrogen in women. The low levels of testosterone may result into low sex drive or libido, while the abnormal levels of estrogen in women may cause mood swings, hot flashes, insomnia, irritability, brain fog, or anxiety. Furthermore, menopausal women with Lyme disease may find it more difficult to deal with the hormonal side effects because the adrenal hormone DHEA provides them about 50 percent of testosterone compared to only 10 percent in men.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may help in enhancing the quality of life of Lyme disease patients. This involves supplementation with hormones, such progesterone, estrogen, DHEA, and pregnenolone to deal with the symptoms caused by hormonal imbalance and allow the patient to focus on fighting Lyme disease. It should be noted that those who have thyroid problems or adrenal fatigue may see some improvement with thyroid and adrenal support nutraceuticals, thyroid hormones, or adrenal hormones. However, it is not advisable to abruptly halt such supports because it may result in a crash for the patient. This is why it is suggested that patients consult with a healthcare practitioner who has experience with Lyme disease and hormonal imbalances. Lyme disease patients may check out the treatment program at Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre that is managed by Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND, and Arv Buttar, NP. They use an integrative approach to combating Lyme disease in humans that may help in reducing joint pain and brain fog, while helping the patient’s immune system.

Since Lyme is a disease caused by a bacterial species, several antibiotics may be used for treatment. Doxycycline is currently the preferred antibiotic for Lyme disease because it may also target other bacteria that usually coexist with Borrelia burgdorferi. Patients with neurological symptoms such as facial nerve palsy, motor radiculopathy, or meningitis may also be given doxycycline. However, this is not allowed for pregnant patients because of its possible effects on the baby.

Some patients may also be provided with herbal treatment in addition to antibiotics. Ghanaian quinine; Japanese knotweed; sweet wormwood; black walnut; hoary rock-rose; Chinese skullcap; and cat’s claw may help with the symptoms of Lyme disease. However, these herbal treatments should be under the supervision of a clinician with experience in herbal medicine and possible toxicities.

How Does Lyme Disease Affect Your Hormones?

As we’ve discussed in our previous blog posts, Lyme disease can cause debilitating symptoms and affect multiple organs.

Due to its resilient nature, Borrelia burgdorferi, one of the main bacterial species that causes Lyme disease, may be difficult to eliminate from the body; this could result in a long-term persistent Lyme infection.

What is less emphasized though is Lyme’s effect on the endocrine (hormonal) system. It makes sense to question this because Lyme can infiltrate almost any area of the body.

Although people link Lyme with other organs, affected endocrine glands may also impact a patient’s well-being. Below is a brief guide to Lyme disease’s impacts on the endocrine system.

Quick Notes

  • Chronic inflammation caused by Lyme disease may interfere with your hormone balance, resulting in abnormal hormone levels.
  • Lyme disease (with an affected hepatic (liver) system) may cause difficulties in metabolizing hormones, which may result in hormonal dysfunction.
  • Magnesium is an essential mineral that’s needed for balancing our hormones. Unfortunately, Lyme disease decreases the magnesium levels in our bodies.

Lyme Disease and the Thyroid Gland

Research suggests that Lyme disease can affect the thyroid gland, leading to thyroid dysfunction, specifically Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a type of hypothyroidism in which the immune system begins to attack the thyroid gland.

Research shows that Borrelia may trigger Hashimoto’s through a process called molecular mimicry. In the case of Lyme disease, molecular mimicry occurs when the body’s immune system not only attacks Borrelia, but also the thyroid tissue that looks similar to Borrelia. Essentially, the immune system cannot distinguish between the pathogen and the healthy tissue, finally attacking both. The result is the development of hypothyroidism, further affecting the functions of the human body as a newly formed, independent syndrome. Symptoms and signs may therefore overlap, making it tough to diagnose.

Lyme Disease and the Adrenal Gland

During a persistent Lyme Infection, patients often experience chronic inflammation. The human body perceives chronic inflammatory states as stressors, leading to adrenal insufficiency (adrenal fatigue) from hormonal depletion.

Unfortunately, adrenal fatigue and Lyme may share common symptoms. An individual who suffers from both conditions might experience chronic pain due to persistent inflammation and lack of the adrenal gland’s anti-inflammatory properties. Adrenal fatigue in patients with Lyme disease is only a symptom induced by the effects of Borrelia burgdorferi on the adrenal glands.

Lyme Disease and the Reproductive Glands

The hormonal disruption from Lyme disease may affect reproductive glands, too. Testosterone, an essential hormone for both men and women, may decrease due to Lyme disease; this may cause low libido or low sex drive.

Women with Lyme disease may experience high or low levels of estrogen, which may trigger hot flashes, mood swings, brain fog, irritability, insomnia or anxiety.

In perimenopausal, menopausal, and post-menopausal women, an adrenal hormone called DHEA provides the body with about 50 percent of testosterone compared with 10 percent in men. Therefore, menopausal women with Lyme disease may have further difficulties in dealing with hormonal side effects.

Hormone Replacement Therapy and Lyme Disease

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) may increase the quality of life of patients with Lyme disease. Supplementing with hormones such as progesterone, pregnenolone, and DHEA may help individuals treat bothersome symptoms and focus on their primary battle, which is Lyme disease.

Note: Individuals with adrenal fatigue or thyroid issues may notice improvement with adrenal and thyroid support nutraceuticals, adrenal hormones or thyroid hormones; these therapies support or replace the function of the gland. However, stopping such supports abruptly may result in a crash for the patient. This is why we recommend seeking the help of a healthcare practitioner who has experience treating patients with Lyme disease and hormone imbalances.

Lyme Disease Treatment in Toronto Now Available at the Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre

Lyme disease treatment in Toronto

Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, has announced that they are offering a program for Lyme disease treatment in Toronto with an integrative functional medicine approach. The program is led by Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND and Arv Buttar, NP. The protocols that they use are designed to help boost the immune system, eradicate infection, and enhance detoxification. These integrative medicine treatments may help in reducing joint pains, fatigue, neurologic symptoms, brain fog, and other symptoms of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease involves the inflammation of various organ systems in the body. It can affect the joints, nerves, skin, and heart. It is the result of an infection by the Borrelia bacteria and this infection is transmitted through the bite of Ixodes ticks. Ixodes scapularis is known as the deer tick or the blacklegged tick, which is a small hard tick that can attach itself to any part of the body. Ticks have to remain attached to the body surface for 36 to 48 hours in order for humans to get infected and develop Lyme disease. Ixodes ticks typically attach themselves to the armpits, groin, and scalp.

Lyme disease in humans is mostly caused by bites from immature blacklegged ticks, known as nymphs. They are normally less than 2 mm in size and are difficult to see. While adult blacklegged ticks can also carry Lyme disease, they can easily be seen and removed, which is why most infections come from the bites of nymphs. It should be noted that nymphs are usually active in the spring and summer seasons.

They also describe the three stages of Lyme disease infection, its symptoms, diagnosis, prevention, and natural treatment. The three stages are the:

Early-localized disease stage - Where the tick bite, which looks like a bull’s eye and is known as erythema migrans (EM), is evident; and the infection has not propagated throughout the body. Early-localized disease stage symptoms may also include: flu-like symptoms(chills, sore throat and fever), headache, sore muscles, fatigue, stiff neck, joint pain and enlarged lymph nodes.

Early-disseminated disease stage - Happens days to weeks after the bite and EM is now seen in various parts of the body. In addition to the flu-like symptoms patients may experience pain, weakness or numbness in the arms, legs, vision changes, cardiovascular and neurologic symptoms.

Late Lyme disease stage - Happens months or years after the initial infection and is accompanied by persistent fatigue, intermittent joint pains, joint arthritis, severe headaches/migraines, cardiovascular issues, travelling pains that come and go in the joints/tendons, concentration issues, mental fogginess, numbness in the arms, legs, hands or feet, vertigo, dizziness, stiff neck and insomnia.

The usual symptoms of Lyme disease include those that are similar to that of the flu, such as fever, body weakness, chills, headache, joint pain, and lethargy. The typical lesion, which is the EM, looks like a red, bull’s-eye-like plaque that may have central clearing and concentric rings. The EM may become as large as 5cm or more and it may become a fluid-filled lesion or a bulla, with surrounding vesicles.

Lyme disease may also cause radiculopathy or neuropathy in humans, which are experienced as weaknesses and tingling sensations of a body part. It may also result in cardiac disease, such as a heart block that may result in fainting. Chest pain and palpitations may also be experienced.

Diagnosis of Lyme disease may be through the presence of the EM, a history of exposure to ticks, and the patient living in an endemic area. However, not all patients report a tick bite. Diagnosis may be difficult because Lyme disease is often misdiagnosed with other illnesses. Nevertheless, laboratory diagnosis is possible via a two-tiered serology testing, which looks for antibodies that are related to Lyme disease.

Lyme disease treatment consists of providing relief for the symptoms, halting the progression of the disease, and offering supportive care for cardiac and neurologic manifestations. Antibiotics, such as doxycycline, may often be used. In addition, herbal treatments may also be used as discussed in their latest article.

Those who plan to consult with Dr. Amauri Caversan ND or Arv Buttar, NP, regarding Lyme disease treatment may want to check out their website, or contact them on the phone (416) 922-4114 or through email at info@dramauriwellnesscentre.com, or visit their Toronto naturopathic clinic located at the heart of Yorkville.

Toronto Wellness Centre Introduces 7 Herbs That May Help Treat Lyme Disease

treat lyme disease with herbs

Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre, a Toronto naturopath clinic, has just published a blog on their website which talks about 7 herbs that may help treat the impact of Lyme Disease on the body and lessen persistent Lyme symptoms. These herbs are often used in what this Wellness Centre terms their ‘integrative functional medicine approach’ to fighting Lyme disease. It is anticipated that by using them they will lessen common Lyme symptoms like brain fog and joint pain, while at the same time supporting the patient's immune system.

Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND, says, “The impact of Lyme Disease is starting to go mainstream because experts are finally realizing just how widespread this often debilitating and potentially fatal disease is. Even though doctors have acknowledged for years that Lyme Disease exists, it wasn’t until recently that this tick-borne ailment has gotten the attention that it deserves to help those that suffer from it. Part of the problem is how often those with Lyme Disease are misdiagnosed due to the hundreds of different symptoms that can be associated with it. Now that testing has improved to a point where it can more accurately identify who suffers from Lyme Disease, health care providers are pooling their knowledge to help discover more ways to help patients with Lyme.”

People who suffer from Lyme disease will be interested in hearing more about the 7-herbs that may help treat Lyme disease that is discussed in the clinic’s recent blog post. All of these medicinal herbs have shown (in-vitro studies) the potential of aiding the fight against the adverse effects that those with Lyme disease experience.

Among the herbs that were mentioned in the blog is Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum). It’s an herb that some feel may act as an antioxidant with the potential to reduce Lyme associated inflammation, protect the heart, and shield the central nervous system. Similar hope comes from the use of Cats Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) which may even have some DNA-repairing properties to the mix as well. The blog indicated that there is also hope for treating the symptoms of Lyme disease when using Cryptolepis (Cryptolepis sanguinolenta). This herb is thought to contain antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amoebic properties. Artemisia (Artemisia annua) is another medicinal herb with over 2,000 years of use that some feel may be beneficial when it comes to treating Lyme disease. Other potentially beneficial Lyme disease-fighting herbs mentioned in the new Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre article include Chameleon Plant (Houttuynia cordata), Chinese Skullcap (Scutellaria Baicalensis), and Black walnut (Juglans nigra).

Dr. Caversan ND added that studies have shown that there is also the potential to receive synergistic benefits when adjuvant herbal therapies combined with doxycycline antibiotics, are used in treating Lyme disease symptoms. These herbs may provide added antimicrobial effects of the drug against Lyme disease which could, in turn, potentially reduce their treatment time.

Dr. Amauri Caversan ND has a special interest in the fight against Lyme disease and other ailments that naturopathic medicine may have the potential to help with. He works in tandem with Arv Buttar, NP to present Lyme disease treatment options that combine conventional medicine with personalized naturopathic care. The Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre offers other natural treatments that include Acupuncture, Integrative Functional Medicine, IV Vitamin Therapy, Detoxification, Bio-Identical Hormone Treatments, and more. The clinic is located in the heart of the Toronto, Ontario area in Yorkville.
