Lyme Disease Treatment for Humans - Toronto Naturopathic Clinic Accepting New Patients

Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, has announced that they are offering Lyme disease treatment and they are ready to accept new patients. Meanwhile, they have recently published a blog post explaining how the disease affects the hormones. Borrelia burgdorferi, one of the main bacterial species responsible for Lyme disease, is difficult to get rid of from the body, possibly resulting in a long-term persistent Lyme infection.

There are many ways by which Lyme disease may affect the hormones. The disease can affect the endocrine system, thus, possibly interfering with a patient’s hormone balance that results in abnormal hormone levels. It may also affect the liver, which results in problems with metabolizing hormones that in turn may cause hormonal dysfunction. The disease may also cause magnesium levels to decline, which also affects the hormones because magnesium is an important mineral for balancing hormones in the body.

lyme disease treatment for humans

Studies indicate that Lyme disease can affect the thyroid gland, possibly resulting in thyroid dysfunction, particularly Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a kind of hypothyroidism in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. This is due to a process known as molecular mimicry in which the body’s immune system will not only attack Borrelia, but also the thyroid tissue that appears similar to Borrelia.

Meanwhile, with a long-term and persistent Lyme infection, patients often suffer from chronic inflammation. And because the body considers chronic inflammatory states as stressors, this results in adrenal fatigue or adrenal insufficiency because of hormone depletion. This is a symptom that is the result of the impact of Borrelia on the adrenal glands.

The hormonal disruption due to Lyme disease may also affect the reproductive glands, resulting in low levels of testosterone for both men and women, and high or low levels of estrogen in women. The low levels of testosterone may result into low sex drive or libido, while the abnormal levels of estrogen in women may cause mood swings, hot flashes, insomnia, irritability, brain fog, or anxiety. Furthermore, menopausal women with Lyme disease may find it more difficult to deal with the hormonal side effects because the adrenal hormone DHEA provides them about 50 percent of testosterone compared to only 10 percent in men.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may help in enhancing the quality of life of Lyme disease patients. This involves supplementation with hormones, such progesterone, estrogen, DHEA, and pregnenolone to deal with the symptoms caused by hormonal imbalance and allow the patient to focus on fighting Lyme disease. It should be noted that those who have thyroid problems or adrenal fatigue may see some improvement with thyroid and adrenal support nutraceuticals, thyroid hormones, or adrenal hormones. However, it is not advisable to abruptly halt such supports because it may result in a crash for the patient. This is why it is suggested that patients consult with a healthcare practitioner who has experience with Lyme disease and hormonal imbalances. Lyme disease patients may check out the treatment program at Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre that is managed by Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND, and Arv Buttar, NP. They use an integrative approach to combating Lyme disease in humans that may help in reducing joint pain and brain fog, while helping the patient’s immune system.

Since Lyme is a disease caused by a bacterial species, several antibiotics may be used for treatment. Doxycycline is currently the preferred antibiotic for Lyme disease because it may also target other bacteria that usually coexist with Borrelia burgdorferi. Patients with neurological symptoms such as facial nerve palsy, motor radiculopathy, or meningitis may also be given doxycycline. However, this is not allowed for pregnant patients because of its possible effects on the baby.

Some patients may also be provided with herbal treatment in addition to antibiotics. Ghanaian quinine; Japanese knotweed; sweet wormwood; black walnut; hoary rock-rose; Chinese skullcap; and cat’s claw may help with the symptoms of Lyme disease. However, these herbal treatments should be under the supervision of a clinician with experience in herbal medicine and possible toxicities.
