Laboratory diagnosis of Lyme disease may occur through two-tiered serology (blood) testing, which check for antibodies related to Lyme. Antibodies are typically formed in response to an infection, against other foreign proteins or to one’s own proteins. Serology tests help recognize when patients have been subjected to a specific pathogen. These tests analyze the patient’s immune response to an infection, against other foreign proteins, or to one’s own proteins.
