Top 5 NAD+ Benefits for Brain Health and Restoration

NAD+ is among the indispensable molecules of life — yet it declines in the human body with aging.

If you haven’t heard of NAD+ or NAD+ therapy, now may be the time to learn about this treatment modality.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) molecules are found in every cell in the body, including our brain cells. Although there are benefits to receiving NAD+ IV therapy or taking NAD+ supplements, health care practitioners and researchers are advocating NAD+ for helping restore brain function and promote brain health.

Benefits of NAD+ on the Brain

Research has shown that NAD+ influences the development, maintenance, and repair of energy at the cellular levels. Some of the benefits of NAD+ for brain health and restoration are:

1. Helps guard the nerve fibres from demyelination

NAD+ protects nerves against demyelination. It may sound like a big word, but demyelination means damage in the protective coating of nerve fibres. This protective covering, called the myelin sheath (hence the term “demyelination”), protects the nerve fibres in the brain, spinal cord, and specific nerves in the body. When the myelin is injured or somehow damaged, the nerve impulses (which are the signals to and from the brain) slow down or stop. In turn, this may cause muscle weakness and stiffness; loss of sensation, vision, and coordination; altered bowel and bladder function; and pain.

2. Acts as messengers in the body

Besides having a neuroprotective effect, NAD+ is essential in controlling physiological functions and cellular communication. NAD+ helps fine-tune the functioning of neurotransmitters, the chemicals that carry messages or signals from one area of the body to another. There are different types of neurotransmitters and some are involved in various functions, such as:

– Appetite
– Blood pressure control
– Digestive system’s response to food
– Liver function
– Memory
– Motivation
– Motor control
– Reward and reinforcement
– Regulation of the heart rate
– Sleep

3. Helps improve memory and maintain cognitive function

Neurotransmitters play a significant role in our central nervous system by supporting cognitive function. Ongoing research and clinical trials suggest that NAD+ may help improve memory and blood circulation in the brain of older adults with memory retention issues. This means that NAD+ may be beneficial in improving concentration and memory.

4. Helps fight against neurological diseases

Scientists believe that NAD+ therapy may help prevent brain diseases. These brain diseases include Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. Studies mention that low levels of brain cells energy (along with an unhealthy microbiome) may be responsible for the development and progression of these neurological diseases. By boosting NAD+ levels via supplementation and/or IV therapy, it may be possible to increase brain cells energy and vitality. Consequently, NAD+ therapy may help individuals stave off neurological disorders.

5. Contributes to restoring brain and neurological function

Whether you’re resting or engaged in intensive physical activity, your body consumes energy. NAD+ participates in the production of energy needed by most cells in the body. And one of the most energy-intensive organs in the body is the brain.

NAD+ is a naturally occurring molecule needed to convert glucose from the food that we consume into energy. When you have low levels of this molecule, there will be a low supply of brain sugar and, therefore, low amounts of energy for the brain cells to work properly.

How can NAD+ IV therapy help you?

Lyme Disease Treatment for Humans - Toronto Naturopathic Clinic Accepting New Patients

Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, has announced that they are offering Lyme disease treatment and they are ready to accept new patients. Meanwhile, they have recently published a blog post explaining how the disease affects the hormones. Borrelia burgdorferi, one of the main bacterial species responsible for Lyme disease, is difficult to get rid of from the body, possibly resulting in a long-term persistent Lyme infection.

There are many ways by which Lyme disease may affect the hormones. The disease can affect the endocrine system, thus, possibly interfering with a patient’s hormone balance that results in abnormal hormone levels. It may also affect the liver, which results in problems with metabolizing hormones that in turn may cause hormonal dysfunction. The disease may also cause magnesium levels to decline, which also affects the hormones because magnesium is an important mineral for balancing hormones in the body.

lyme disease treatment for humans

Studies indicate that Lyme disease can affect the thyroid gland, possibly resulting in thyroid dysfunction, particularly Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a kind of hypothyroidism in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. This is due to a process known as molecular mimicry in which the body’s immune system will not only attack Borrelia, but also the thyroid tissue that appears similar to Borrelia.

Meanwhile, with a long-term and persistent Lyme infection, patients often suffer from chronic inflammation. And because the body considers chronic inflammatory states as stressors, this results in adrenal fatigue or adrenal insufficiency because of hormone depletion. This is a symptom that is the result of the impact of Borrelia on the adrenal glands.

The hormonal disruption due to Lyme disease may also affect the reproductive glands, resulting in low levels of testosterone for both men and women, and high or low levels of estrogen in women. The low levels of testosterone may result into low sex drive or libido, while the abnormal levels of estrogen in women may cause mood swings, hot flashes, insomnia, irritability, brain fog, or anxiety. Furthermore, menopausal women with Lyme disease may find it more difficult to deal with the hormonal side effects because the adrenal hormone DHEA provides them about 50 percent of testosterone compared to only 10 percent in men.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may help in enhancing the quality of life of Lyme disease patients. This involves supplementation with hormones, such progesterone, estrogen, DHEA, and pregnenolone to deal with the symptoms caused by hormonal imbalance and allow the patient to focus on fighting Lyme disease. It should be noted that those who have thyroid problems or adrenal fatigue may see some improvement with thyroid and adrenal support nutraceuticals, thyroid hormones, or adrenal hormones. However, it is not advisable to abruptly halt such supports because it may result in a crash for the patient. This is why it is suggested that patients consult with a healthcare practitioner who has experience with Lyme disease and hormonal imbalances. Lyme disease patients may check out the treatment program at Dr. Amauri Wellness Centre that is managed by Dr. Amauri Caversan, ND, and Arv Buttar, NP. They use an integrative approach to combating Lyme disease in humans that may help in reducing joint pain and brain fog, while helping the patient’s immune system.

Since Lyme is a disease caused by a bacterial species, several antibiotics may be used for treatment. Doxycycline is currently the preferred antibiotic for Lyme disease because it may also target other bacteria that usually coexist with Borrelia burgdorferi. Patients with neurological symptoms such as facial nerve palsy, motor radiculopathy, or meningitis may also be given doxycycline. However, this is not allowed for pregnant patients because of its possible effects on the baby.

Some patients may also be provided with herbal treatment in addition to antibiotics. Ghanaian quinine; Japanese knotweed; sweet wormwood; black walnut; hoary rock-rose; Chinese skullcap; and cat’s claw may help with the symptoms of Lyme disease. However, these herbal treatments should be under the supervision of a clinician with experience in herbal medicine and possible toxicities.
