According to a study in 2015, oxidative stress may be the result of the Lyme disease pathogen. This is because oxidative stress may initiate chronic inflammation symptoms and cause oxidative damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids. This study found that there was a significant quantity of mitochondrial superoxides, which is a free radical that may contribute to oxidative stress. The result of this study was the suggestion that Lyme disease may result in mitochondrial dysfunction that in turn results in much lower levels of NAD+. Thus, many integrative functional medicine practitioners focus on restoring NAD+ levels in Lyme patients through oral and IV therapy, as a way to help manage inflammation and counteract oxidative stress.
